A good board meeting starts with a good agenda. Even the most skilled facilitator can’t make a silk purse of out of the sow’s ear of an agenda filled with reports.

But a good agenda means facilitating discussions between people with different agendas and viewpoints which can prove challenging as well. These six tips for managing a board meeting will help assure that you facilitate a quality discussion, moving the organization forward while engaging (and retaining!) board members.

1. Talk less and listen more when facilitating a meeting.

2. Get to know the members of your board.

3. Ask more questions.

4. Paraphrase others’ comments.

5. Keep the discussion productive.

6. Watch the time.
