Grant Writing Course

Proven Strategies for Grant Success

Join Linda Wastyn LIVE for this 5-part class and learn how to effectively plan, research, and write a grant application with detailed instruction and hands-on exercises that walk you through the grant review process.

Hybrid format. Join us for LIVE classes either online from your office or in-person at Wastyn & Associates in Davenport, Iowa.

Class Schedule: 8:30-10:00 AM CST

  • Learn more about how to plan your projects and find funders. Once the meeting is over, you will then have two weeks to complete the homework.

  • The needs statement serves as the most important part of your grant application as it outlines the problem that you seek to remedy through your program. Remember that your grant reviewers don't necessarily have the same depth of knowledge about this problem or the same passion about solving it as you do; this section serves as your opportunity to convince them of the need to act (by funding you, of course!). Yet most needs statements fall short. Learn the elements of a persuasive needs statement with practice writing your own.

  • Now that you have explained in great detail the problem your clients or community faces, you need to describe how you propose to fix the problem using grant dollars. The more specific, the better! Learn how to write a compelling project plan that convinces the funder that they should fund your solution to the identified problem.

  • While every application describes the need and the project plan, the other elements fluctuate. This session will discuss the other key elements of most grant applications; the budget, sustainability, evaluation, and dissemination steps. Once complete, you should have a complete grant application that you can submit to a funder for consideration!

  • Now that you have all of the elements of the grant application completed, you want to make sure you have written in well, which means clearly, without errors, and in a way that relates to your audience. This session will look at some of the ways that you can evaluate your application to make sure that you have put your best foot forward.

What our participants say

  • First of all, I gotta say, this is one of the best classes I've ever had. I've got probably 2,000 hours of various classes at my day job over the last 18 years and some have been great and some have been crap. Yours has taught me tons. I love that the lessons are real world and we use class examples. It's not just theory that way.

Trey Barker, Spring 2022 Class Participant

  • "The expertise of the instructor is the best part of this course. I appreciate this!"

    KAYLEE FISHER, WORLD RELIEF

    CATHIE ROCHAU, FRIENDSHIP MANOR

Frequently Asked Questions

  • This training will be offered in a hybrid format with synchronous online sessions offered on Zoom and in-person every other week. “Homework” in between sessions will help you apply what you learn during the 90-minute sessions to your own organization and work. This program has the goal for you to leave with most of a grant application written and reviewed that you can submit to a real funder.

  • We have offered an overview of the grant seeking process as well as program around each stage in the grant seeking process and multi-day programs that provide hands-on exercises that let you immediately practice and get feedback on a mock grant application.

  • You can't afford not to improve your grant skills. One new successful grant will more than pay for this class. Your investment in training will return on that investment many times over in more effective and efficient grant seeking, both of which mean more money.

Many funders will also invest in improving your organization’s development and build your capacity.

  • A limited number of scholarships are available. Scholarship request must be received at least two weeks before the class. Apply online here.
